4/28-5/9/14: State Projects and Sculptures
Both 8th grade classes are completing a state sculpture. Students will choose a state and create that shape to serve as a base and emboss (put on top) two shapes that represent facts about that state.
The first 8th grade class that meets is creating an animal wire sculpture. Students will use wire to create an animal's "skeleton," a flat 2-d shape of the animal. Next, students will add body and volume to the animal by adding more wire. Students will then create a platform for the animal.

Mandalas 1/30/14 - 2/10/14
What is a mandala?
A mandala is a design that originated in Buddhism. The radial design and patterns are to help a person focus on reaching Enlightenment.
What is Enlightenment?
Buddha taught that Enlightenment is achieved when a person understands three principles:
1) Everything changes (new discoveries and understandings help us make progress)
2) Everything is connected (cause and effect)
3) Karma (what goes around comes around)
What are students doing for this project?
Students are choosing a goal for themselves relating to school, sports or another interest/activity. Students will create a radial design with abstract patterns and images that represent their goal.
Elements and Principles Included:
Shape
Space
Color
Pattern/Repetition
Unity
Balance
